Dear Friends,

Summer arrives with exciting anticipation for most of us — memories of running barefoot through the grass,
chasing fireflies at dusk, long afternoons at the lake. It’s a season that carries a kind of magic well into
adulthood.

For the children we serve at the Montgomery County Women’s Center, summer often looks very different.

Families arrive at our shelter with only what they can carry. Instead of falling asleep after a day at the lake, children fall asleep in an unfamiliar place. The long days of summer, which should bring ease and adventure, can instead feel uncertain and overwhelming.

At our shelter, we work to restore small pieces of childhood — a splash of water on a hot afternoon, a paintbrush and a blank canvas, a bedtime story followed by real laughter. Last summer, Emily – a 5-yearold girl who arrived with nothing but a pink backpack spent an afternoon drawing a hopscotch course in chalk across our courtyard. Her mother told us it was the first time she’d heard her daughter laugh in months.

Moments like these don’t erase what a child has been through — but they make room for healing, and for joy.

Our work is made possible through the generosity of donors like you. Your support allows us not only to provide safe shelter, but also to offer experiences that help children reclaim pieces of their childhood. It ensures that even in the midst of crisis, there is still room for hope.

As you reflect on your own cherished summer memories, I hope you’ll consider a gift to the children and families in our care. With your support, we can continue building a place where childhood gets to begin again.

Thank you for being part of the Montgomery County Women’s Center community.
