SUMMARY:WOODLANDS COMMUNITY SAFETY EXPO
DESCRIPTION:The Woodlands Township will hold the National Night Out Community Safety Expo on Saturday\, October 15\, 2022\, from noon to 3 p.m. at Northshore Park\, 2505 Lake Woodlands Drive in The Woodlands\, TX 77381. This free\, family-friendly event highlights public safety in the community and is an excellent event for all ages. \nThere will be equipment and displays from local\, state and federal agencies\, including Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office\, The Woodlands Fire Department\, Homeland Security and more. Residents are invited to climb aboard apparatus and learn about their roles in our community and how they keep us safe. The various agencies and groups will have information and giveaways to distribute on fire and crime prevention\, emergency preparedness and health and wellness. \nThe expo will also include public safety demonstrations and fun for all ages. Safety presentations will include K-9 demonstrations\, the Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s robots\, drone demonstrations\, and Entergy Arcs and Sparks power line dangers. The Kid Zone will have face painting\, a bounce house\, crafts and an opportunity to meet McGruff the Crime Dog. Complimentary food and refreshments will be offered while supplies last\, sponsored by H-E-B\, Dietz and Watson\, Chick-fil-A\, and Firehouse Subs. \n\nSTOP BY OUR BOOTH AND SAY HI!! You are invited to help us BLOW OUT THE STIGMA that surrounds domestic violence at our all day bubble blowing event!\nSTIGMA: One very important issue we\, as a community\, try to battle. It’s the negative assumptions associated with being a victim of domestic violence. Many domestic violence victims suffer in silence. Enduring a steady pattern of abuse and humiliation at home\, they bravely attempt to present a solid exterior in public. Sometimes they pull it off; usually\, they do not. We notice the signs. Whether physical or emotional\, red flags are flying. \nIn such cases\, some people wonder why victims continue to deny the abuse\, which is often visibly manifest to those around them. The answer has to do with the way domestic violence victims fear they will be treated. \nContinuing education and community awareness of the dynamics of domestic abuse can reduce the perceptions of the stigma that cause many victims to suffer in silence. Encouraging reporting through support and empowerment\, by friends\, family and the community\, will help victims break the cycle of abuse and embark on the road to recovery. \n

SUMMARY:#ASKMEWHYIWEARPURPLE CAMPAIGN
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US IN WEARING PURPLE THIS MONTH!\n\nUse your social media to send a message to victims of domestic violence\, that you stand with them.\nShare a photo of you (or a group of you) wearing purple and share your “WHY”.\nMake sure to TAG us!!!! #WhyIwearPurpleTX Facebook: @Montgomery County Women’s Center Twitter & Instagram: @officialmcwc\nUpload one of your sample “ASK ME WHY I WEAR PURPLE” profile pictures to your social media.\n\n \n>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> \nMillions of people all over America are wearing purple for Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. Will you join us? Since the early 1900’s\, purple and lavender have been used to represent women’s rights and causes. In October\, 1987\, the first DV awareness month activities ever held joined in the proud purple tradition. \nFreedom from violence is a basic human right – not only for women\, but for people of color\, abused LGBTQ+ persons\, trafficked people\, battered men\, and young people who suffer harm caused by the cruel assertion of power and control. \nDomestic and dating violence is not just physical harm. It also includes emotional\, mental\, financial\, and sexual abuse.  It can involve the victim’s possessions\, employer\, family pets\, extended family\, and others who are targeted in the abuser’s efforts to cause harm to the victim. In all cases\, the abuser uses controlling behaviors in a continuing cycle to get and maintain power and control. \nThe National Domestic Violence Resource Center reports that nearly 75% of Americans personally know someone who has been a victim of abuse. Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women – more than car accidents\, muggings\, and rapes combined. And while 85% of battered people are women\, 15% are not. In the U.S.\, domestic violence is so common that it happens to someone every 9 seconds. \nSo why do victims stay? Why does so much domestic violence go unreported? Victims stay because they’re afraid to leave\, and they leave when they’re afraid to stay. Many abusers control the finances\, leaving victims with no independent means of support. And ultimately\, reporting violence to the authorities increases the abuser’s anger and violence. Often\, it just isn’t safe or easy for people to leave abusive situations. In addition\, many batterers and victims drink and use drugs together\, making escape from violence that much harder.
