SUMMARY:#ASKMEWHYIWEARPURPLE CAMPAIGN
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US IN WEARING PURPLE THIS MONTH!\n\nUse your social media to send a message to victims of domestic violence\, that you stand with them.\nShare a photo of you (or a group of you) wearing purple and share your “WHY”.\nMake sure to TAG us!!!! #WhyIwearPurpleTX Facebook: @Montgomery County Women’s Center Twitter & Instagram: @officialmcwc\nUpload one of your sample “ASK ME WHY I WEAR PURPLE” profile pictures to your social media.\n\n \n>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> \nMillions of people all over America are wearing purple for Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. Will you join us? Since the early 1900’s\, purple and lavender have been used to represent women’s rights and causes. In October\, 1987\, the first DV awareness month activities ever held joined in the proud purple tradition. \nFreedom from violence is a basic human right – not only for women\, but for people of color\, abused LGBTQ+ persons\, trafficked people\, battered men\, and young people who suffer harm caused by the cruel assertion of power and control. \nDomestic and dating violence is not just physical harm. It also includes emotional\, mental\, financial\, and sexual abuse.  It can involve the victim’s possessions\, employer\, family pets\, extended family\, and others who are targeted in the abuser’s efforts to cause harm to the victim. In all cases\, the abuser uses controlling behaviors in a continuing cycle to get and maintain power and control. \nThe National Domestic Violence Resource Center reports that nearly 75% of Americans personally know someone who has been a victim of abuse. Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women – more than car accidents\, muggings\, and rapes combined. And while 85% of battered people are women\, 15% are not. In the U.S.\, domestic violence is so common that it happens to someone every 9 seconds. \nSo why do victims stay? Why does so much domestic violence go unreported? Victims stay because they’re afraid to leave\, and they leave when they’re afraid to stay. Many abusers control the finances\, leaving victims with no independent means of support. And ultimately\, reporting violence to the authorities increases the abuser’s anger and violence. Often\, it just isn’t safe or easy for people to leave abusive situations. In addition\, many batterers and victims drink and use drugs together\, making escape from violence that much harder.

SUMMARY:Coffee & Cars For A Cause
DESCRIPTION:HOSTED BY THE WOODLANDS CAR CLUB\n\nPlease join us this Sunday\, Dec. 4\, 6:30-10:30 a.m. for The Woodlands Cars & Coffee for a Cause Charity Car Display & Annual Holiday Toy Drive @ Market Street!\n\n☆We are SO excited once again that 2 charities will benefit this holiday season from YOUR participation at this event in December!\n\n☆Montgomery County Women’s Center will be onsite to receive unwrapped toys that will be given to the mothers of the children who are clients of MCWC\, so they will be able to make their Christmas a little brighter. \n\n☆According to MCWC\, many victims & their children courageously walked through their doors facing a myriad of additional challenges this past year. Their shelter saw an increasing number of women who were pregnant\, had families w/multiple children\, & children w/special needs. Whatever their situation\, MCWC was available 24 hours a day\, 7 days a week as victims regained their voice & began to thrive. Without you and your support this would not be possible.\n\n☆Now more than ever in these challenging times we are in\, so many charities have fallen short with donations\, volunteers\, & many critical services needed are on the rise right in our own communities\, so your support means everything. https://mcwctx.org/ Montgomery County Women’s Center\n\n☆In addition\, this is the last Sunday for our 4th quarter charitable recipient: Community Assistance Center-CAC. They offer assistance with rent/mortgage\, utilities\, food\, & clothing for individuals in Montgomery County. TX facing a temporary financial crisis. Community Assistance Center https://cac-mctx.org/\n\nAlso\, I will be starting a new TWCC event t-shirt pre-order list for anyone who would like to order a shirt & the cost is $30. You can pay for the shirts this Sunday or mail a check\, and once we have the payments in-full\, I will place the order. There is a 50-quantity order minimum\, so hope we can get that going for the new year.\n\n☆Let’s make this holiday season extra special for the people in our community that need it the most! \n\nThank you ALL for supporting our mission in “Using Our Cars to Give Back to Our Community!” See you Sunday – Rain-or-Shine! ~Dana

SUMMARY:New Years Community Clean Out Project
DESCRIPTION:The New Year is a time for reflection\, recommitment and… re-organization! It’s the perfect time to re-gift unneeded holiday presents\, get a fresh start with your wardrobe and donate to your favorite local thrift store – Something Special! \nSomething Special offers new and gently-used clothing\, accessories and housewares to the public. Vouchers are also provided for families in need to shop for free. The best part? Every Something Special purchase benefits families fleeing abuse in our community. \nNeed more motivation to clean out your closet? Check out five reasons why decluttering and donating will get your 2023 off to the right start: \n\n\nLess stuff = more time!\n\n\nSay goodbye to spending hours sifting through your closet. Imagine all your options hung up neatly and clearly visible. By paring down your wardrobe\, you’ll spend less time trying to find outfits and more time wearing the things you love. \n\n\nMake room for the things that matter.\n\n\nClearing out the old means making room for newer and better things to come into your life. Less clothes also means the opportunity to redecorate\, reorganize and make the most of your closet space. \n\n\nDeclutter to de-stress!\n\n\nSimplifying your environment by clearing out unused or unwanted items can improve concentration\, help you sleep and elevate your mood. Letting go is a natural\, healthy process in our growth that makes room for better things. \n\n\nSave money!\n\n\nGoing through your closet allows you to rediscover old pieces and reintroduce them to your wardrobe – you get the rush of a great shopping find without the cost! Plus\, re-familiarizing yourself with your clothes will stop you from spending money on things you already own. \n\n\nSave the planet.\n\n\nDonating your clothes benefits your community AND the environment. Donating and shopping secondhand means that clothes have a longer lifespan and don’t require as many resources as producing new clothes. \nGiving back isn’t just good for your community – it’s good for you too! Give yourself – and your old items – a new start this year. Declutter and donate to Something Special\, or give us a call to get assistance with larger donations (936) 441-4044 x: 53. \nDonations can be dropped at 2 locations: \n\nSomething Special Resale Store: 19073 I-45 South\, Shenandoah (in the Portofino Plaza next to Sam’s Club)\nMontgomery County Women’s Center Administrative Office: 1401 Airport Rd\, Conroe 77301

SUMMARY:PAJAMA DONATION DRIVE
DESCRIPTION:Every year thousands of children are forced to flee and live at a shelter to escape domestic violence. This disruption of home life can lead to a lonely experience\, especially at nighttime\, and something as simple as a pair of pajamas can help make bedtime a little more comforting for these women and children. \nOur emergency shelter accepts multiple victims and children every day. These victims often flee with only the clothes on their back. Our organization provides each person with the basics that they need to make it through each day. This month we are collecting pajamas for the women\, men\, boys and girls who enter our shelter. Pajamas can be new or gently used. Our shelter houses upwards of 75 individuals each night. \n  \nDonations can be dropped (or mailed) to: Montgomery County Women’s Center: 1401 Airport Rd\, Conroe\, TX 77301

SUMMARY:ITEMS FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT VICTIMS (DONATION DRIVE)
DESCRIPTION:This is the underwear that no woman wants to wear.\n\nAnd it’s not just because it’s a plain cotton sports bra the color of Pepto-Bismol.\n\nIt’s because this is the underwear we give to survivors of rape and sexual assault after we take their own underwear as evidence.\n\nWe take their nice underwear\, their favorite underwear\, their cute underwear\, their comfy underwear\, their best-fitting bra\, their 75-dollar designer bra\, their weekend bra\, their work bra.  And we take it away from them while wearing gloves\, and drop it into a paper bag\, and seal it with evidence tape and write their police case number on the outside\, and send it to the state crime lab\, and they never see it again.\n\nAnd we give them some Fruit from the Loom to wear home\, back to a life and a world they no longer recognize and no longer trust.\n\nBut here’s the kicker:  That boring sports bra is WAY way WAY better than what some survivors get when they’re discharged.\n\nSome women have ALL of their clothes taken for evidence.  Shirt.  Undershirt.  Pants.  Bra.  Underwear.  Even their socks.  And if the local forensic/sexual assault program that cares for them doesn’t have — or won’t buy — or can’t buy — clothes for them\, they get discharged in hospital scrubs.\n\nAnd grippy hospital socks.\n\nAnd postpartum white-mesh hospital underwear.\n\nAnd no bra.\n\nEver seen a woman who’s just been raped\, just had a three-hour forensic exam\, just had every surface of her battered body swabbed and photographed and inventoried for the police\, ever seen her walk out of a hospital wearing oversized hospital scrubs —\n\n—and her arms wrapped tightly around her chest\, ashamed\, because she doesn’t have a bra to wear?\n\nI have.\n\nAnd I absolutely refuse to ever see it again.\n\nThis is $150 of underwear from Kohl’s.  My team and I buy this underwear ourselves for our patients\, because we are no longer willing to let any of our survivors go home without a bra\, or without a decent pair of underwear.\n\nIf you are looking for a place to donate something meaningful this holiday season\, reach out to your local Forensic Nursing team\, rape crisis center\, or domestic violence shelter.\n\nGo to Wal-Mart\, or Kohl’s\, or Target\, and buy clothes you’d feel comfortable in curled up\, safe at home\, watching TV.  And donate them.\n\nNew underwear\, a comfortable bra\, a comfortable pair of pants\, a soft hoody\, squishy socks — all of these things can help make a woman who has survived a violent rape feel like a person again.\n\nA person.\nNot a victim.\n\nBecause it’s a long walk down that hallway\, out of the hospital\, and back into the world.\n\nAt least she can be comfortable as she takes each step.\n\n* * *\n\n\nHeartbreaking but REAL & RAW account from a forensic nurse.\n\nMontgomery County Women’s Center advocates responded 515 sexual assault exams in 2021. \nIf you or your organization are interested in donating bras & underwear for our Sexual Assault Advocacy Program they can be dropped off or mail to:\nMontgomery County Women’s Center: 1401 Airport Rd\, Conroe TX 77301 (Attn: Siomara)
